Kia has confirmed a new hybrid powertrain for its Seltos crossover. This hybrid version will most likely make its debut with the next generation of the Seltos, which is due in the latter half of this year. A hybrid powertrain could make a huge difference in a fuel-efficient market like India and it makes perfect sense to bring such a product to our market.
What Do We Know?
For now, Kia has just made an official confirmation of the hybrid powertrain being in development. Kia has not revealed any further details about the engine or its related specifications. Many sources do suggest that the 1.5-litre naturally aspirated 4-cylinder petrol engine powering the Seltos will be mated with a hybrid system. This engine will make its debut in the upcoming 2nd-generation Seltos crossover and also be seen in Kia’s upcoming 3-row SUV. We still don’t know if the Seltos will come with a mild-hybrid system, a strong-hybrid system or a plug-in hybrid system – Kia offers all three globally.
By 2030, Kia wants their hybrid portfolio to make up around 25% of its total sales in India. For EVs, the company is trying to get 18% market share. Kia is understandably trying to capture the Indian consumer migrating to hybrid and electric vehicles. Currently, Kia has almost no market share in these sectors, with their only electric offering being the Kia EV6 which doesn’t gather much attention due to its exorbitant pricing.
What’s New With The 2nd-Gen Seltos?
Kia has been rigorously testing the 2nd-gen Seltos for quite some time now. The new Seltos is expected to come with thoroughly refreshed exteriors and interiors, in line with their electric products. Expect the same powertrains to continue, with the new hybrid powertrain. We expect Kia to launch it in the second half of this year.
