JLR To Expand Local Assembly

1 min read

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), under Tata Motors, has confirmed plans to inaugurate local assembly operations in Ranipet, Tamil Nadu, by early 2026. A completely knocked down (CKD) plant is being built, with plans to shift current CKD assembly from Pune to Ranipet. Models expected to be assembled include the Range Rover Evoque and Velar.

Ranipet Plant Opening In Phases

The initial focus will be on shifting existing local assembly of the Evoque and Velar models currently assembled at the Pune plant to Ranipet, with a potential annual capacity of 30,000 units. It is spread across 70 of its 470 acres in the first phase, it aims for a monthly output of 500 units, scaling gradually to 2,500–3,000 by early 2026.

Once Tamil Nadu’s 2026 assembly elections conclude, work on Phase 2 will begin, targeting a full-scale output of 2,50,000 units annually. This stage will support electric vehicle production for both JLR and Tata’s premium Avinya EV range.

Tariff Benefits ?

Tata executives also mentioned India’s upcoming Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the United Kingdom and how this new plant could help with faster model introduction by allowing early market testing of new products without waiting for full CKD localisation

Tata Motors has budgeted ₹9,000 crore over five years to develop this plant, taking full advantage of the upcoming FTA and working to ensure their operations over the long term align with their growth forecasts. The Ranipet plant introduces domestic CKD assembly capacity for JLR, offering cost containment and tariff mitigation. It lays the groundwork for future electric vehicle output. However, EV production remains contingent on the success of Phase 2. Enthusiasts can expect price cuts and better supply of spare parts for their vehicles, but bear in mind that the full localisation of EVs will arrive in a later stage.
