Jaguar Land Rover has aborted its plan to jointly introduce EVs with Tata Motors. In September 2024, JLR and Tata had finalised plans for the manufacturing of JLR’s Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA) platform-based EVs in India for the global market. However, the plans have now been cancelled due to cost reasons.

Plans Lose Traction

JLR EVs were planned to be built in Tata Motors’ upcoming plant in Tamil Nadu. This plant was slated to produce over 2.5 lakh vehicles annually once it reached the full operating capacity in 5-7 years. JLR was also planning on sourcing the components locally, but they failed to find the right price-quality balance for locally sourced EV parts, eventually leading to the plans being aborted. JLR conducted a meeting with local suppliers in Mumbai in November 2024, where the company asked suppliers to provide initial information on the pricing of parts, but now, talks have been aborted.

Tata Avinya Delayed

Tata Avinya models are said to be based on the JLR EMA platform. But now, with the local manufacturing plans being shelved, the Avinya range of vehicles is said to be delayed. Tata has to reportedly make changes to its designs as the costs are not working with JLR. The first model from the Avinya range was expected to debut in 2025, but Tata announced that the first Avinya model would debut in 2026. This was announced during the unveil of the 2nd Avinya concept. Some components were initially planned to be jointly sourced for both companies and Tata’s EV unit had planned to finalise orders with some suppliers by the end of January. Now it remains to be seen how things unfold with the halt of the initial joint manufacturing plans.
