India experienced a notable auto retail sales surge in December 2025, as overall vehicle demand strengthened toward the end of the calendar year. Retail sales across passenger vehicles rose roughly 15 per cent year-on-year in December 2025, according to validated industry data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) and dealer bodies.

This growth marks a solid improvement from November’s modest expansion and reflects several converging factors. Dealers reported that GST tax cuts on small cars and SUVs helped drive quicker purchase decisions as buyers sought to capitalise on lower costs before potential New Year pricing changes.

Top Performing Brands During December 2025

The sales surge in December 2025 was reflected in how individual companies performed at the year’s end. According to industry data, Maruti Suzuki continued to lead the market, posting a 37 per cent increase in domestic sales with 1,78,646 units, the highest among all carmakers. Its extensive portfolio of entry-level and compact models, including the Swift, Wagon R and Brezza, helped it maintain a clear leadership position.

Mahindra & Mahindra also delivered a robust performance, registering a 23 per cent growth with 50,946 units sold, driven mainly by strong SUV demand for models like the Scorpio-N, Thar and XUV series. Tata Motors followed close behind with solid growth of 13 per cent, selling 50,046 units, supported by popular models such as the Nexon, Punch and Tiago.

Toyota saw a 37 per cent rise in domestic sales as buyers responded well to models like the Innova Hycross, while Kia India posted a notable 105 per cent year-on-year jump with 18,659 units, marking its best December performance to date. Hyundai maintained steady growth, and even smaller players such as Skoda and Renault recorded healthy increases in sales. Together, these performances highlight a broad-based recovery across both mass-market and niche segments.

SUVs, Small Cars & Regional Shifts

The auto retail sales surge in December 2025 was broad-based, but SUV and utility vehicle demand continued to be a dominant force. Improved consumer sentiment, competitive financing rates and festival-season offers contributed to a higher year-end run-rate. In addition, small car sales saw significant uplifts as affordability improved following very slight but welcomed tax rationalisations.

Notably, rural buyers outpaced cities in December, with passenger vehicle purchase growth of approximately 26.6 per cent in rural India, showing that automotive demand is expanding beyond traditional urban strongholds. Festive buying cycles and aggressive dealer incentives were among the cited contributors to this rural uptick.

Automaker Performance & Dealer Confidence

The auto retail surge coincided with strong production and wholesale figures reported by major manufacturers in late 2025. Several brands reported year-end backlogs and healthy dealer pipelines as discounting, introduction of new models, and inventory stabilisation encouraged buyers to close deals. Dealers surveyed in early January projected continued momentum into the first quarter of 2026, buoyed by upcoming launches and seasonal demand.

As the market resets in 2026, industry analysts suggest that SUVs, compact crossovers and entry-level segments are likely to sustain higher growth rates, while electric and hybrid models gain more traction as consumer choice broadens.
