The Indian automotive landscape continues to throw up surprises, and July 2025 was no different. After being edged out by Mahindra for several months, Hyundai made a comeback to claim the second spot in passenger vehicle sales, relegating Mahindra to third place.

Hyundai posted domestic sales of 42,661 units, surpassing Mahindra’s 39,267 units, according to Vahan and industry reports. This swing arrives after Mahindra’s robust run in the first half of the year, where strong SUV demand powered Scorpio-N, Thar, and XUV 3XO to repeated victories. For Hyundai, it’s a morale boost following a series of subdued months and declining model-specific sales for popular offerings like the Venue and i20.
The Creta Drives Sales
Hyundai’s ability to bounce back owes much to its star performer, the Creta, which reclaimed its position as India’s highest-selling car in June 2025, surpassing 15,700 units and registering growth despite a softened market sentiment. The dominance of the Creta, coupled with consistent numbers from the Exter and Aura has helped Hyundai sustain.

Mahindra, meanwhile, continues to grow YoY off the back of its SUV-heavy lineup. Yet July saw fatigue creep into the supply chain, with dispatches slipping and certain models like the Bolero Neo and XUV 3XO experiencing sharper declines.
Strengths & Weaknesses
The fight for the number two position reveals sharply contrasting strategies. Mahindra’s relentless push in SUVs led to market share highs, capitalising on shifting preferences. The brand’s vertical focus, however, led to overexposure in one segment, making dips in sales more pronounced when SUV sales cooled.
Conversely, Hyundai’s broader line-up and aggressive refresh cycles played a key role in its rebound. The company’s willingness to push exports (totalling over 16,100 units in July) and plug demand gaps with the timely supply of best-sellers like Creta and Venue has again helped, especially when inventory mismatches from earlier months were corrected.
Conclusion
Neither Hyundai nor Mahindra can afford to relax. Seasonality, new product launches, and shifts in customer sentiment will likely keep the race for second place razor thin. With Hyundai gearing up for refreshed models and Mahindra set to expand its electric portfolio, expect the competition to remain fierce throughout 2025.
