Volkswagen has officially confirmed the launch of Golf GTI in India, with the performance-oriented hatchback being expected to arrive by August 2025. This move marks the first time the iconic Golf GTI will be available in the Indian Markets, following the limited release of the Polo GTI in 2026.
The new Golf GTI comes with a 2.0L four-cylinder turbo-petrol TSI engine that produces 265 BHP and 370NM of torque. The engine is mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission that powers the front wheels. The Golf GTI achieves a 0-100kph time of 5.9 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 250kmph. Progressive steering with variable gearing, an electronically controlled front-axle differential lock, and an optional adaptive suspension system are some of the mechanical features.
The Golf GTI retains its sporty look with 18-inch ‘Richmond’ diamond-cut alloy wheels (19-inch wheels optional), GTI badging, and red highlights on the bonnet and brake calipers. The front bumper is aggressive with big air intakes, and twin tailpipes and a dual-tone roof spoiler at the rear. It can be had with premium lighting options such as Matrix LED headlights and 3D LED tail-lights, which can be adjusted via the infotainment system.
On the inside, the hatchback is equipped with a 12.9-inch infotainment screen, updated for improved graphics and user friendly menus featuring a voice assistant integrated with ChatGPT.
The cabin has the classic GTI elements such as tartan-patterned seat upholstery and a GTI-specific steering wheel. The digital instrument cluster offers GTI-specific graphics, and the push-to-start button pulses red before ignition.
The pricing is on the higher side which is expected to hit the markets with ₹45-50 Lakh (ex-showroom). In the Indian markets, its primary competitors will be the Mini Cooper S, and Śkoda Octavia vRS (if launched again).
The launch of Volkswagen Golf GTI in India is an indication of the company’s plans to introduce performance variants to Indian motorists. The Golf GTI’s blend of performance, design, and technology will have a big impact in the premium hatchback market when it hits the showroom.
