Evolution Of Mahindra’s mHawk 2.2L Diesel Engine: From Scorpio To Thar ROXX

1 min read

The 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine has been a core part of Mahindra’s SUV lineup since 2007. Initially launched with the Mahindra Scorpio VLX, the engine was introduced to replace the older 2.6L CRDe unit with a more efficient, refined, and responsive alternative. Over time, it has powered a wide range of Mahindra vehicles including the Scorpio, XUV500, Thar, Scorpio-N, XUV700, and the recently launched Thar ROXX.

Launch

The first-generation mHawk engine had a displacement of 2,179 CC and produced around 120 BHP and 290 NM of torque. It was a 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel unit featuring common-rail fuel injection and improved thermal efficiency. Paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox, it delivered better low-end torque and reduced engine noise and vibration compared to older Mahindra engines.

Power Upgrades

In 2011, Mahindra introduced the mHawk in the XUV500, where it was tuned to produce 140 BHP and 330 NM of torque. This version came with 6-speed manual and automatic gearbox options and featured a Variable Geometry Turbocharger (VGT). The engine was also made available in updated Scorpio trims and certain variants of the first-generation Thar.

Compliance With BS6

With the rollout of BS6 emission standards in 2020, the mHawk engine was updated with new emission control technologies. These included a diesel particulate filter (DPF), exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), and a retuned ECU for improved combustion efficiency. Power output in most models reached 140 BHP, maintaining the engine’s reputation for torque-rich performance.

New-Generation SUVs

The second-generation mHawk was introduced in newer models such as the Scorpio-N, XUV700 (base diesel variants), and Thar (2020). These versions came in different states of tune ranging from 130 BHP to 175 BHP and up to 400 NM of torque, paired with 6-speed manual and automatic gearboxes. The engine also supports multiple drive modes and complies with BS6 phase 2 norms.

Continued Relevance

The recently launched Thar ROXX continues to use the same mHawk 2.2L engine with no mechanical changes. Positioned as a factory-customised off-road variant, it features cosmetic enhancements while retaining the proven diesel powertrain. Despite Mahindra’s future plans for electrification, the mHawk remains a critical component of its diesel SUV lineup.
