The car maker has slightly upgraded its two entry level models, the Alto K10 and S-Presso by adding Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) to them as standard equipment now. This move aligns with the more stringent mandatory minimum safety requirements for vehicles laid out by Global and Bharat NCAP.
Notably, this safety feature has been added at no additional cost over the current ex-showroom prices of both the models.
What is ESP?
It is a computerized technology that improves a vehicle’s stability by detecting and reducing loss of traction (skidding), also referred to as electronic stability control (ESC) or dynamic stability control (DSC). When the program detects loss of steering control, it automatically applies the brakes to help steer the vehicle where the driver intends to go. Braking is automatically applied to wheels individually, such as the outer front wheel to counter oversteer or the inner rear wheel to counter understeer. Some systems also reduce engine power until control is regained.
Existing Safety Kit
Already subsisting safety features in both the cars includes two front airbags, Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and rear parking sensors.
Mechanically Unchanged
Both remain the same drivetrain wise and are powered by a one-litre engine that produces 67 HP, 89 N-m of torque in the petrol version and 57 HP, 82 N-m in CNG guise. Transmission choices include a five-speed gearbox, manual or A.M.T. (automated manual transmission) for the petrol; while the CNG variant is limited to the manual option only.
Price And Rivals
The Alto K10 is priced between ₹3.99-5.96 lakh and the S-Presso from ₹4.27-6.12 lakh (ex-showroom). They compete between themselves and mainly the Renault Kwid, but also with lower variants of cars from one segment above like the Tata Tiago, Hyundai Grand i10 Nios and its own stable mates the Celerio, WagonR and Ignis.
