British luxury carmaker Jaguar Land Rover has been spotted testing a prototype for an electric vehicle belonging to its Range Rover family. The car was spotted undergoing cold-weather testing while being fully camouflaged.

Land Rover is known to be planning the reveal of its all-electric Range Rover shortly, but that isn’t what was spotted—the vehicle spotted was much lower and sleeker than the Range Rover and the Range Rover Sport and also longer than the current Velar.

Technical Information

Jaguar Land Rover promised last year that their new EMA (Electrified Modular Architecture) platform, intended for smaller SUVs would debut with a new model belonging to the Range Rover family this year. This platform will also be used for the upcoming Range Rover Evoque and the Discovery Sport. It’s likely this new model, suspected to be the new Velar, was spotted.

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) also has the MLA platform for larger SUVs. The MLA platform made its debut in the latest Range Rover and also underpins the latest Range Rover Sport. We expect this to be electrified as well.

Design

The electric Velar appears to have a very sporty stance, and the positioning of the rear door relative to the rear wheel appears to suggest that the Velar might come with a third row of seats as well. Some other changes we could see were the clamshell bonnet, large alloy wheels and flush door handles. The registration plate has also been moved down to the bumper from the tailgate. The rear window is very shallow and is covered in a plastic panel, which begs the question: Is there any glass there at all? Jaguar’s new concept EV sedan doesn’t have a rear window, which could hint at a new design element.

Rivals

The electric Range Rover Velar is expected to rival the Porsche Macan EV, closely matching it in terms of both price and power.
