Cars Offering 5-Star Safety Under Rs 10 Lakh

2 min read

In a market long criticised for treating safety as optional, trends have been changing. The sub‑10 Lakh segment now includes several 5‑star safety cars. Buyers can and should choose highly rated models with strong crash protection, as Indian cars get safer and move closer to global standards. Safety should always be a priority, and brands are starting to recognise that too.

Tata Altroz

The Tata Altroz received a 5-star Global NCAP adult safety rating. Its bodyshell was rated stable, and it now comes with six airbags as standard, electronic stability control, hill-hold, a 360° camera, blind-spot monitoring, and connected car features. Tata offers the Altroz with multiple powertrains: a 1.2 L naturally aspirated petrol (manual, AMT, and DCT), a diesel variant, and a CNG option.

Tata Punch (ICE)

The Punch’s 5-star adult occupant rating in Global NCAP made it the safest car in its price band at launch. Built on the ALFA architecture like the Altroz, it offers high ground clearance, ESC, dual airbags, ISOFIX mounts, and a stable body structure. Performance from the 1.2 L petrol engine is adequate for city speeds, but it struggles above 100 KM/H.

Tata Nexon

The Nexon has the distinction of being crash-tested twice: first by Global NCAP and later under Bharat NCAP, scoring 5 stars in both. The latest model includes ESC, six airbags as standard, and a seatbelt for the rear centre passenger. Power comes from a 1.2L turbo-petrol or a 1.5L diesel, both available with multiple transmission options.

Mahindra XUV 3X0

The Mahindra XUV 3X0 earned a 5-star adult and child safety rating in the Bharat NCAP. Its bodyshell was rated stable, and it offers up to six airbags, ESC, and hill-hold assist. The cabin feels solid, and the insulation levels are commendable. Engine choices include a 1.2L MPFI turbo-petrol, a 1.2L GDI turbo-petrol, and a 1.5L diesel. All offer good torque and perform well in mixed-use conditions.

Škoda Kylaq

The Kylaq received a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating for both adult and child protection. The bodyshell was rated as stable, and it scored 30.88/32 for adults and 45/49 for children. Standard safety features include six airbags, ESC, ISOFIX mounts, TPMS, hill-hold assist, and multi-collision braking. It’s built on the Volkswagen Group’s MQB-A0-IN platform, shared with the Virtus, Taigun, Kushaq & Slavia, which have already scored 5-star Global NCAP safety ratings too.

It’s powered by the 1.0L TSI turbo-petrol engine producing 115 BHP and 178 Nm, paired with either a 6-speed manual or torque-converter automatic. The engine is refined, and both gearboxes perform well in city and highway conditions.

New Maruti Dzire

Maruti’s new Dzire was recently rated 5 stars by Bharat NCAP for adult protection and 4 stars for child occupants. It comes equipped with six airbags, ESC, hill-hold, ISOFIX mounts, a 360° camera, and TPMS on top variants. It’s based on Suzuki’s HEARTECT platform, which has drawn criticism for crash performance, with most other cars based on this platform scoring poor safety ratings, but this result appears to reverse that trend and is an outlier.

Power comes from a 1.2 L naturally aspirated petrol engine, available in manual, AMT, and CNG formats. The motor is fuel-efficient and refined.

Conclusion

Five-star safety ratings are no longer confined to expensive SUVs or sedans. Across hatchbacks, sub-compact SUVs, and sedans, there are now multiple cars offering robust crash protection under Rs 10 lakh. Each model has clear trade-offs. But buyers no longer need to compromise on safety when buying on a budget, which in itself is nothing to scoff at.
