BYD’s ₹20 Lakh EV SUV In The Works

The world’s second largest electric carmaker is considering its own mid-size electric crossover priced at around ₹20 lakh. The company have shortlisted a few models for our market and if the exploration concludes favourably, they could enter the B-segment by the second half of 2025 and challenge upcoming cars like the Hyundai Creta EV, Maruti Suzuki eVX and the recently launched Tata Curvv EV, as well as the MG ZS EV.

The crossover might be unveiled at the upcoming Bharat Mobility Show in January 2025, which will act as a proper platform to measure prospective customer interest in the car.

Rajeev Chauhan, head of Electric Passenger Vehicles (EPV) Business at BYD India said that “There are many auto companies in India doing some small or big research, including ours. There is a plan to introduce an SUV priced between ₹15-25 lakh, which will be decided based on the study’s outcome,”.

“Our products are not positioned in the ₹15-25 lakh market currently, that is a large one and we are on that journey. We need these learnings to develop the right business case to enter the next orbit,” also said Chauhan.

BYD want to directly take the fight to the market leader Tata Motors, which as of now is in a portfolio expansion mode and Mahindra will also soon enter the foray with a brand new range of born electric SUVs.
