After showcasing their Sealion 6 plug-in hybrid SUV at the Auto Expo 2025, BYD has reportedly been testing the vehicle on Indian roads. Latest spy shots suggest the vehicle might be launched in India soon.
The test mule was spotted without any camouflage or coverings. The car comes with a plug-in hybrid system, unique in not only its class but in the entire market. This could be the first mass-market car to come to India with such an advanced hybrid system, offering the best fuel efficiency amongst all types of hybrid cars & the ability to drive on purely electric power for 80 km.
The BYD Sealion 6 is designed with BYD’s “Ocean Design” philosophy in mind, with the front fascia featuring C-shaped LED headlights paired with a new bumper design featuring horizontal slats and chrome surrounds. The car features silver roof rails, chrome window surrounds & creases across the bonnet & the side profile of the car giving it a muscular appearance. The car’s design has been made as aerodynamic as possible while being shaped like an SUV. At the rear, a connected taillamp with a “water-drop matrix pattern” dominates. The car rides on 19-inch dual-tone alloy wheels designed for aerodynamics. The car features sharp lines & a modern aesthetic that makes it stand out in the electric vehicle market.
Inside, the Sealion 6 features BYD’s signature floating centre console with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster & a 15.6-inch rotatable touchscreen serving as a portal to access a large chunk of the car’s functionality. It comes with wireless Android Auto & Apple CarPlay as standard. The “Ocean Design” philosophy is continued as seen with the crystal gear lever. The car comes with premium seats featuring ventilation, heating & electronic adjustment. It also comes with a large panoramic sunroof enhancing the sense of space inside the cabin. The electric SUV features a dual-tone theme & leatherette upholstery to make it feel more premium.
The vehicle features a heads-up display for the driver showing information such as speed & directions. It comes with an Infinity-branded audio system synchronised with ambient lighting. It also features voice control.
The BYD Sealion is powered by a plug-in hybrid system featuring BYD’s Super Dual Mode technology. It integrates dual electric motors with an internal combustion engine, and an advanced oil-cooling system to achieve maximum efficiency. BYD’s 1.5L Xiaoyun engine is the heart of the car, with the electric system being powered by BYD’s proprietary Blade technology. It comes in two variants globally, the Dynamic variant featuring a single motor driving the front wheels generating a combined 217 PS, & the Premium variant with all-wheel-drive and dual motors producing 323 PS of power.
