The BMW Z4 is a two-seater convertible sports car currently available in India as a fully imported model. Offered in the M40i variant, it features an iconic B58 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine and an 8-speed automatic transmission. The Z4 blends classic roadster proportions with updated styling and modern technology. With a focus on open-top driving and performance, it targets a niche segment of buyers interested in luxury sports cars. The latest update brings the highly anticipated 6-speed manual transmission with the introduction of the Pure-Impulse edition.
The limited-edition roadster will make headway in the country as a Completely Built-Up (CBU) unit. Two new metallic colourways, viz. Frozen Deep Green and Sanremo Green have also been added.
On the outside, the BMW Z4 M40i Pure Impulse Edition features updated design elements, including a new BMW kidney grille with a horizontal inner pattern, large air vents, vertically positioned LED headlights, and a soft-top roof that opens or closes in 10 seconds. It also comes with a rear spoiler and L-shaped LED tail lights. Notably, this is the first time the top-spec version is offered with a manual transmission.
Inside, the two-seater BMW Z4 M40i Pure Impulse Edition offers a driver-focused cockpit with ambient lighting, dual-zone climate control, a power-adjustable driver’s seat with memory function, high-gloss black trim, an M leather steering wheel, and cup holders hidden under the center armrest. The standard interior features Leather Vernasca Cognac upholstery with contrast stitching, exclusive to the manual transmission variant.
Optional features include keyless Comfort Access, a soft top with Anthracite Silver Effect, lumbar support for both front seats, M-branded seat belts, adaptive LED headlights with high beam assist, a driver assistance package, upgraded mirrors, a Harman Kardon sound system, Parking Assistant, and a head-up display.
The BMW Z4 M40i Pure Impulse Edition is powered by a 3.0-litre inline-six engine that produces 340 BHP and 500 Nm of torque, available between 1,600 and 4,500 rpm. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds with the manual transmission and 4.5 seconds with the automatic. Buyers can choose between a six-speed manual gearbox or an eight-speed automatic sourced from ZF.
The special edition of the BMW Z4 M40i is priced at Rs. 96.90 lakh and Rs. 97.90 lakh for automatic and manual versions, respectively. The only true rival to the Z4 would be BMW’s M2, which gets the better S58 engine equipped with two turbos and produces 480 BHP & 600 Nm of torque, far more than the Z4. The M2 is a proper sports car which handles and drives far superior to the Z4.
If you are looking for a luxury grand touring sports car that is comfortable and calm, with a rather raw driving experience, then the Z4 M40i is for you. For a customer who is looking for a high-performance sports car with raw driving dynamics and a proper BMW M car, the BMW M2 will be a much better option, with a proper M chassis and much better performance.
