BMW has officially unveiled the fifth-generation X5, introducing a completely redesigned luxury SUV with the widest range of powertrains in the model’s history. Alongside petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid variants, BMW has revealed the first-ever all-electric iX5. Additionally, a hydrogen-powered version will join the lineup later, highlighting BMW’s multi-powertrain strategy for the future.
Exterior Design & Styling
The new BMW X5 adopts the brand’s latest Neue Klasse design language while maintaining its familiar SUV proportions. It features a taller front fascia with illuminated kidney grilles, new double-X LED lighting signatures, and adaptive LED headlamps. Furthermore, the SUV gets flush BMW Winglet door handles, redesigned LED tail-lamps, sculpted body panels, and alloy wheels ranging from 21 to 23 inches.
Interior & Premium Features
BMW has completely redesigned the X5’s cabin with a cleaner layout and advanced digital technology. The dashboard now features BMW’s Panoramic iDrive display, a 17.9-inch central touchscreen, a 3D Head-Up Display (HUD), and an optional passenger display. Other highlights include a panoramic glass roof, sports seats, ambient lighting, wireless charging, OTA updates, soft-close doors, and a premium Bowers & Wilkins Dolby Atmos audio system.
Safety & Advanced Technology
The fifth-generation X5 comes equipped with a comprehensive safety package. Buyers get Level 2 ADAS featuring adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, automatic emergency braking, parking assist, highway driving assistance, and urban driving support. Additionally, the SUV includes multiple airbags, tyre pressure monitoring, electronic stability control, and a rear touchscreen for climate control on higher variants.
Engine Options & Performance
BMW will offer the new X5 with five different powertrains. The petrol X5 40 xDrive produces 400 HP and 580 NM, while the diesel X5 40d xDrive develops 313 HP and 670 NM. Plug-in hybrid variants include the X5 50e xDrive with 489 HP and 700 NM, alongside the flagship X5 M60e xDrive delivering 612 HP and 800 NM. Both plug-in hybrids offer an electric-only driving range of up to 102 KM (WLTP).
BMW iX5 Electric Performance
The all-electric BMW iX5 features a 141 KWH battery pack paired with a dual-motor AWD system producing 578 HP and 805 NM. BMW claims a 0 to 100 KM/H sprint in just 4.6 seconds and a top speed of 210 KM/H. Furthermore, the iX5 delivers an impressive WLTP-certified driving range of up to 845 KM. It supports 460 KW DC fast charging, allowing a 10 to 80 percent recharge in approximately 23 minutes.
Hydrogen Powertrain & Future Technology
BMW has also confirmed a production-ready hydrogen-powered iX5. Developed with Toyota, the fuel-cell system produces 401 HP and stores hydrogen in twin carbon-fibre tanks. Refuelling is expected to take only a few minutes, offering convenience similar to conventional petrol and diesel vehicles while producing zero tailpipe emissions.
India Launch Expectations
BMW has already confirmed that the next-generation X5 Long Wheelbase will arrive in India. The luxury SUV is expected to launch during the second half of 2027, following its global rollout. India is also likely to receive petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid variants, while the electric iX5 could arrive later depending on market demand.
Expected Prices In India
The fifth-generation BMW X5 is expected to carry a premium over the current model. Prices in India could start at around ₹1.10 crore (ex-showroom) for the petrol and diesel variants, while plug-in hybrid versions may exceed ₹1.40 crore. The all-electric BMW iX5 is expected to be priced from approximately ₹1.60 crore if introduced in India.
