BMW India is preparing a key update for the X3 petrol lineup, with the introduction of a more powerful xDrive30 variant planned for 2026. At present, the X3 petrol is available in xDrive20 form and uses a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine that produces 190 HP. This output places it well below direct rivals in the segment. The Mercedes Benz GLC 300 delivers 258 HP, while the Audi Q5 and Volvo XC60 offer close to 250 HP from similar displacement engines. This gap has been a consistent drawback for the X3, especially given its premium positioning. BMW now appears ready to address this issue with a higher output version aimed at improving performance parity.
xDrive30 Variant Brings 258 HP & Mild Hybrid Assistance

The upcoming BMW X3 xDrive30 will use the same 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine but in a much higher state of tune. Power output will rise to 258 HP, while peak torque will reach 400 NM. This puts the X3 in line with its strongest competitors on paper. The new variant will also feature a 48V mild hybrid system, which can briefly add up to 11 HP and 25 NM during acceleration. This setup improves throttle response and low speed efficiency. Power will continue to flow through an 8‑speed automatic gearbox, paired with BMW’s xDrive all‑wheel‑drive system.Buyers can expect stronger mid range performance compared to the current petrol model.
Interior Update Responds To Indian Customer Feedback

Alongside the mechanical upgrade, BMW India will make a notable change inside the cabin. The current X3 uses a mesh style sustainable dashboard trim, which has not been widely appreciated by Indian buyers. Many owners have found the material difficult to maintain in dusty conditions, and some feel it lacks the premium feel expected at this price point. BMW plans to replace this trim with leatherette, which aligns better with local preferences and offers easier upkeep. This change is based directly on customer feedback. Despite this interior update, BMW is not expected to revise prices upward for the X3.
Expected Impact

With the arrival of the xDrive30 variant, the BMW X3 petrol will finally match its rivals in outright power. This should help the SUV regain lost ground in a highly competitive luxury segment. The existing diesel option already performs well in terms of torque and drivability, but the petrol model has lagged behind until now. Pricing details have not been announced, though the xDrive30 is likely to command a premium over the current xDrive20. Even so, the stronger engine and cabin updates could improve the X3’s overall value proposition. For buyers who prefer petrol power but wanted more performance from the X3, the 2026 update could prove to be a decisive improvement.
