BMW Working On Hardcore Offroader

1 min read

BMW is developing a new SUV, internally codenamed G74, which will prioritise off-road performance over BMW’s traditional dynamics-based approach. It is planned to be positioned alongside the X7 but with a more rugged theme. Production will take place at BMW’s Spartanburg facility in the US, with a market launch expected in 2029.

Platform, Powertrains & Off-Road Hardware

The G74 will reportedly be based on a modified version of the X5’s unibody architecture instead of a traditional ladder frame. Expected features include a locking rear differential, off-road-specific drive modes, enhanced underbody protection, and all-terrain tyres. Powertrain options have not been confirmed; current reports indicate petrol engines with possible hybrid assistance. BMW has confirmed a fully electric version is not on the cards.

Rivals, Positioning & Market Outlook

The model is expected to compete with the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, Land Rover Defender, and Ineos Grenadier. This would be BMW’s first dedicated off-road model in decades, as they’ve historically focused on the Autobahn. This is a whole new sphere of driving that BMW still needs to prove themselves in. Even BMW’s current SUV lineup is geared towards drivers. The G74 could assume flagship SUV status once the XM phases out, but it is still a new and unproven concept and hence it depends on the performance of the car.

Conclusion

The premium off-roader segment in India is currently led by the Defender. It has found steady demand despite its premium pricing. If BMW introduces the G74 locally, its success will rely on balancing off-road performance with road comfort. As of now, the BMW G74 is at an early stage of development. Technical specifications, powertrains, and regional launch plans are yet to be confirmed. Its positioning as a genuine off-road product will be tested once prototypes and production models emerge.
