In a fresh development for luxury automobile buyers, BMW is reportedly planning to introduce long-wheelbase (LWB) variants in its SUV line-up for the Indian market. This move aligns with the growing demand for more spacious and comfortable SUVs in the country, particularly among the premium segment customers who value rear-seat comfort and additional legroom.
On the sidelines of the 5 Series launch, Jean-Philippe Parain, the company’s senior vice president for sales regions Asia-Pacific, Eastern Europe, Middle East, and Africa, said, “SUVs still make up more than 50 percent of BMW’s India sales. So it’s really, really important. And we are looking at all options. We understood that long wheelbase is important for the Indian market; because of the time spent on the road, space is a key feature.”
These extended versions of the popular X series SUVs will cater to the increasing preference for chauffeur driven vehicles, offering better comfort for passengers seated in the rear. The longer wheelbase not only provides extra legroom but also allows for more refined interior layouts and additional features focused on passenger comfort.
Until recently the 3 Series and 5 Series were available with LWB only in China, in left hand drive configuration. BMW also offers some of its SUVs, including the iX1, X1, X3, and X5, with LWB exclusively in China. So, with some modifications to their running gear and a few other components, these SUVs could be introduced in India.
The LWB versions of these models will likely come with enhanced rear seat amenities, such as executive style seating, improved infotainment systems and advanced climate control options.
Introducing LWB models could give BMW a competitive edge in the premium SUV segment, where it competes with brands like Audi, Mercedes-Benz, and Volvo. These competitors have also been focusing on maximizing rear seat comfort and luxury, especially for markets like India, where high net worth individuals and business executives often prefer to be driven rather than drive themselves.
The LWB SUVs are expected to come equipped with the latest technology, including semi autonomous driving, other advanced safety features and many car connectivity options.
Although the exact timeline for the launch of the LWB variants has not been disclosed, sources suggest that BMW might unveil these models at upcoming auto shows, with a market launch slated for 2025. The LWB versions are anticipated to be priced at a premium over the standard wheelbase models, reflecting the additional comfort and features offered.
