BMW is gearing up to introduce the i5 Long Wheelbase (LWB) in India in early 2026. The model will be assembled at the company’s Chennai plant, making it the carmaker’s first electric sedan to be locally produced in India. Localisation will help BMW offer the i5 LWB at a more competitive price compared to a full import. The decision to bring the LWB version aligns with buyer preferences in India, where rear-seat comfort plays a major role in purchase decisions for executive sedans. The i5 LWB will sit above the 530Li and below the i5 M60 in the 5-series lineup.

Cabin Layout & Features Emphasising Comfort

The i5 LWB will be longer than the i5 M60 offered in India. It comes with an extended wheelbase aimed at creating more legroom for rear passengers. The i5 M60’s length measures at 5,060 MM, while the LWB will likely measure 5,175 MM. This additional length is concentrated towards rear cabin space. The interior is likely to feature the brand’s latest curved dual-screen setup with a 12.3-inch instrument display and a 14.9-inch infotainment unit. Rear passengers are expected to get comfort-oriented equipment such as electrically adjustable seats, a panoramic glass roof, and ambient lighting. Reports also indicate that BMW may offer a 31.3-inch Theatre Screen for the rear, similar to the one available on the i7. BMW will likely use the same materials it offers in its global markets. It focuses on soft-touch surfaces, recycled interior trims, and EV-specific design elements.

Battery, Range, & Expected Powertrains

Globally, BMW offers the i5 range with multiple battery and motor layouts, including single-motor rear-wheel-drive and dual-motor all-wheel-drive versions. Although BMW has not confirmed which powertrains it will assemble in India, reports indicate that the company may bring the eDrive40L. It delivers around 340 HP with a single rear motor and uses a 97 kWh battery pack. The CLTC rating estimates its range at 713 KM, though the company has not yet revealed the Indian figures. The M60 xDrive, on the other hand, produces close to 601 HP, making it one of the most powerful electric sedans in its class. Charging compatibility should also remain strong, supporting high-output DC fast charging that can replenish a significant portion of the battery in a short time. The i5 LWB will compete directly with models like the Mercedes EQS and could even influence diesel buyers currently considering the long-wheelbase E220d.

Pricing & Final Thoughts

With local assembly planned for the Chennai plant, BMW appears intent on giving the i5 LWB a strategic price advantage. Reports suggest a starting price in the ₹85 – ₹90 lakh range, placing it below the fully imported i7 while keeping it within the premium executive bracket. The move towards local production also signals BMW’s confidence in the electric luxury sedan space. The i5 LWB might appeal to buyers who prefer strong rear-seat comfort, long-distance usability, and a more approachable price than flagship luxury EVs. It will also help BMW strengthen its presence against German and Swedish rivals, many of which are expanding their CKD EV portfolios. With launch set for early 2026, the i5 LWB is likely to become one of the most significant new EV entries in the premium category.
