BMW M3 is the most famous sports car in the BMW market. While the Electric M3 is in the works, the brand recently revealed that they have no plans of adopting a downsized 4-cylinder engine. The Brand also stated that they will be taking over the 6-cylinder combustion engine to the next generation M3.
BMW M CEO Frank Van Meel says that reducing the engine capacity and cylinders of engines is not the answer to future performance cars. Hence, they won’t be downsizing engines in any of their performance cars.
Frank Van Meel On Downsizing Engines
In an interview with Australian automobile magazine Drive, Frank Van Meel said “Instead of downsizing to a 4-cylinder engine, we will be continuing with the 6-cylinder engine in the next-generation M3″. He also stated that a 4-cylinder engine can never match the performance of a larger 6-cylinder 3.0L engine on the track. ” We are going electric on the other hand, we are going to keep our 6-cylinder engine for the next generation. In regards to downsizing, It’s about performance output on tracks, and managing to deliver the same performance in a 4-cylinder will be very difficult.”- He added
Audi Shares The Same Ideology
Just Like BMW M, Audi has also rejected the idea of using a 4-cylinder engine in their performance-focused RS cars.
