Land Rover is preparing to expand its Defender family with the introduction of a smaller, fully electric model expected to debut by 2027. Often referred to as the “Baby Defender,” the upcoming SUV will sit below the current Defender 90 in terms of size and price. It will aim to target a wider audience by combining the rugged design language of the Defender with the lower running costs of an electric powertrain. Positioned as an entry point into the Defender range, it is expected to appeal to customers who want the Defender in a more compact and accessible package.

Built On A New Electric Platform

The Baby Defender EV will reportedly be developed on Jaguar Land Rover’s new modular electric platform, which is being engineered to support a wide range of vehicles. This architecture is expected to house 800-volt charging, with ultra-fast charging support up to 350 KW. While official specifications are yet to be released, higher trims are likely to feature a dual-motor setup with all-wheel drive, while entry-level variants could get a single motor. This flexibility will be critical as Land Rover transitions towards an electric-heavy lineup.

Design Inspired By The Defender Line

In terms of styling, the Baby Defender is expected to carry forward the boxy silhouette and upright stance that define the Defender family. Despite its smaller footprint, it is likely to retain short overhangs, a high ground clearance, and protective body cladding. Inside, the cabin may offer a minimal layout compared to larger models, but still feature modern digital interfaces and sustainable material choices. However, unlike the ICE Defender, the baby Defender won’t get a body-on-frame platform. The vehicle is reported to be underpinned by the new EMA platform.

Market Position & Global Relevance

Expected to arrive by 2027, the Baby Defender EV will be an important product for Land Rover’s global strategy. It will give the company a chance to compete in the growing market for compact electric SUVs while building on the Defender brand. It is expected to replace the Discovery Sport and may even be the indirect successor to the Freelander. By offering a smaller and likely more affordable option, Land Rover could expand its customer base beyond traditional luxury SUV buyers. With demand for electric vehicles steadily rising and stricter emission regulations coming into play in many regions, the Baby Defender EV could be crucial in the brand’s electrification journey.
