Audi has chosen to revert back to its old name nomenclature. In 2023, Audi announced that they were introducing a new naming strategy to distinguish its ICE models from their EV models. The EVs were supposed to use even numbers and the ICE models were to bear odd numbers.
However, this strategy has backfired, creating confusion among customers. Upon receiving feedback from customers, Audi has decided to revert back to their old naming convention. This nomenclature will only be used for upcoming launches, and the existing names will be as is i.e., the new A5 will not go back to the A4 name.
From now on, the following suffixes will be used to differentiate ICE models from EV models:
TFSI for Petrol, TDI for Diesel, TFSIe for plug-in hybrids, and e-tron for EVs.
Suffixes to differentiate between body styles will remain the same as before i.e., Avant, Sedan, or Sportback.
“A” will continue to be used for sedans and “Q” will continue to be used for crossovers and SUV’s.
The next generation A6 will be the first vehicle to use the new nomenclature. The A6 will not be rebranded as the A7, and will instead debut as the A6 e-tron for the electric version. Additionally, Audi has stated that the smallest models in the A and Q lineup will be axed, meaning the A1 and Q2 will be axed at the end of their product cycle.
