Audi is set to expand its SUV lineup with the anticipated Audi Q9, a vehicle poised to become the German automaker’s largest and most luxurious model yet. It’s Audi’s second three-row SUV, taking the mantle from the Q7 for the brand’s largest SUV.
Official images of the Audi Q9 remain under wraps, but spy photos and renders hint at a minimalist yet muscular design. Expect a massive single-frame grille—a hallmark of modern Audi SUVs—paired with sleek, slim LED headlights. The side profile is likely to feature large alloy wheels and a long wheelbase, with traditional Audi design elements. At the rear, unique taillight designs and a glossy black bumper could finish up the design.
The Audi Q9 is likely to be one of the last new models from the brand to launch with internal combustion engines. Engine options could start from the 3.0L V6 turbo-petrol shared with the Q7 and the Q8, with a 4.0L twin-turbo V8 for those who want more performance. Hybrid options are also on the table. A plug-in hybrid variant, possibly borrowing technology from the Porsche Cayenne. High-performance SQ9 or RS Q9 models could come with power figures exceeding 600 BHP. All versions are expected to come equipped with Audi’s renowned Quattro all-wheel-drive system and an 8-speed automatic transmission.
Reports suggest the Audi Q9 will be built on the Volkswagen Group’s Premium Platform Combustion (PPC), their latest and final flagship internal combustion engine platform. This choice makes sense, considering Audi’s plan to phase out combustion engines by 2033. It leaves room for the Q9 to enjoy a full generational run before the shift to electric models.
In terms of size, the Audi Q9 will exceed the Q7’s dimensions, potentially stretching beyond 5.2 meters in length and boasting a wheelbase of above 3 meters. This increase in size should translate to a roomier cabin, offering a real three-row layout with seating for six or seven passengers, depending on the configuration.
The Audi Q9 is expected to debut in 2026, with vehicles hitting dealerships in 2027. It would likely be priced above Rs. 1 Crore owing to its flagship positioning. Audi’s largest three-row SUV will compete with its European rivals, the BMW X7, Mercedes-Benz GLS & the Range Rover Sport.
