After the launch of the X-Trail, Nissan will bring the Ariya e-SUV to India in the following weeks. Internationally, it competes with EVs like the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, Volkswagen ID.4 and the Tesla Model Y, to name a few.
It made its global debut in 2020 with the design being near identical to its concept version and was also spied testing in India last year (2023). It sits on the Renault Nissan Alliance CMF-EV electric vehicle architecture, which is also used by the Renault Megane e-Tech electric SUV.
It features a new design shield and gets an illuminated Nissan logo in some markets and has a distinct coupe shape with a prounounced shoulder line that links the front and back of the car. It sits on either 19 or 20 inch wheels depending on the variant.
The interior is minimalistic with two large 12.3 inch screens dominating the dashboard with most functions being controlled by haptic touch feedback, which means that almost no physical buttons are present which is always somewhat disappointing. Higher variants get a heads up display as standard along with Bose branded speakers.
Globally the Ariya comes with both a single motor rear wheel drive (RWD) and a twin motor all wheel drive (AWD) powertrain as well. There are also two battery pack options on offer; the base model with a 63 kWh battery pack makes 217 HP, 300 N-m of torque and has a claimed range of 402 km. The mid-spec with 87 kWh produces 242 HP, 300 N-m with claimed range being 529 km. The top variant 87 kWh churns out 306 HP, 600 N-m of torque while having a claimed range of 513 km.
As far as safety is concerned, it has all the advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) features along with the newer version of Nissan’s ProPilot technology. It was also awarded a full five out of five star crash test safety rating by the Euro NCAP back in 2022.
The Ariya will sit at the top of Nissans’ India product portfolio while being a competitor in the niche high end E-SUV segment and it will be sold only in limited numbers; more details to surface in the coming few days most likely.
